What to see in San Vito Lo Capo

The landscape of the beach of San Vito lo Capo recalls that of the Caribbean. A long stretch of soft sand, palm trees, the crystal clear sea on the horizon. The currents are practically absent and, around, you can see the houses of the town and the promontory of Monte Monaco. An authentic glimpse of Sicily, perfect for those who want to spend a holiday by the sea, but also want to discover natural, artistic and, of course, food and wine beauties. San Vito, in fact, is famous for its cous cous, so good that it has inspired a multi-year event: the CousCous Fest.

Everything in San Vito is a real invitation to relax. The narrow streets that smell of the sea, the low houses with bougainvillea and jasmine, the shoreline and the restaurants scattered along the alleys. When you are at the beach, everything is right at your fingertips, so you can easily organize a whole day in comfort. Leaving the sea behind, you can dedicate yourself to the town. The heart is the square, where the Sanctuary-Fortress is located. It was built around the chapel dedicated to San Vito martyr and originally served to protect the numerous faithful from pirate raids. Going towards the lighthouse, you come across an ancient circular tower, probably of Arab manufacture: the "Torrazzo". The lighthouse, on the other hand, was built at the behest of the Bourbons, to make navigation safer. A walk under the tower, 43 meters high, is mandatory.

Little remains, however, of the ancient Tonnara of San Vito Lo Capo. It dates back to 1411, but was definitively abandoned in 1965. It is located 3 kilometers from the town, on the western tip of the Gulf of Castellammare on the road to San Vito, however, there is a small Moorish-style chapel. This is the Chapel of Santa Crescenzia, built in honor of the nurse of San Vito. Speaking of the things to see in San Vito Lo Capo, of course, we cannot mention the many beaches, including those in the surrounding area. It goes from Baia Santa Margherita to the Caletta del Bue Marino, passing through Macari and the famous Riserva dello Zingaro.

The Riserva dello Zingaro is a nature reserve consisting of 7 coves. You can visit it on foot (7 km one way and 7 km return) or by boat. The most visited is the Uzzo cove. Halfway along the path you will find a cave. I advise you to wear a hat, to put on comfortable shoes and to bring a supply of water especially on the hottest days. By car, the Zingaro reserve is about 25 minutes from the holiday home. I remind you that at the entrance you will pay a ticket of about € 5 and that pets are not allowed. A tip: in the morning before going to the reserve, call 092435107 to make sure it is open to the public.
